Afraid of Change? Find out why!

Growth is not in your comfort zone, it is in the unknown.

It’s a new year and you're a new you! Are you tired of living year after year without trying new things and living life to the fullest? Let this year be different. Embrace yourself for the whole world to see! Maybe you’ve never had a photoshoot and you're nervous. That is okay! I love working with new clients to show them that a photo session is supposed to be fun and enjoyable!

Have you made New Year's Resolutions? How is that going? Did you try for something easy or did you stretch yourself and get out of your comfort zone? We don’t like to be stretched and made uncomfortable. We like to stay where we know we thrive.

Things come naturally for you. You probably made good grades in school with little to no effort. Maybe you are a natural athlete, mathematician, cook, artist etc. There's a lot of benefits to being a “natural genius” but few people talk about the other side of the coin. If something doesn’t come naturally or you don’t nail it on the very first try you feel like you have failed. That is anything but the truth! This is the imposter syndrome referred to as the “natural genius” and it is more common than you may think!

It’s easy to judge your competence on how quickly you master new tasks. You find confidence in things coming quickly to you. Because of that you probably stay in your comfort zone as much as you can. Growth is not in your comfort zone, it is in the unknown. There’s a few easy ways to overcome this imposter syndrome.

Try something new

Will it be uncomfortable? Yes.

Will it be easy? No.

Will it be worth it? ABSOLUTELY!!!

Trying something new can be something as small as a new food or as large as going into a new business venture. This is a must for EVERYONE! Trying new things keeps you teachable and it keeps you humble. By willing to try something new it forces you to be open to new ideas and experiences. For me it is what has kept my creativity and ambition alive. I try to live my life to the absolute fullest because I am well aware that tomorrow is not promised.

Trying new things also keeps us humble. By allowing ourselves to experience new things we are allowing ourselves to fail. We should never expect to be great at something on the first try. That is simply not a realistic expectation. It’s perfectly fine to fail as long as we use those failures to strengthen us rather than allowing it to defeat us.

Embrace your weakness

It is a fact that no one is good at everything. There is a reason that the  phrase “jack of all trades” always ends with “master of none”. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Embrace those weaknesses. Maybe you hate public speaking, heights, working out. Stretch yourself. Look for small opportunities to stretch yourself in areas you aren’t strong. It will be through this practice that you will learn to gain confidence in skills you were once lacking.

I have experienced this first hand. I stuttered so bad growing up that I spent my entire elementary school in speech therapy. I actually went to college for ministry and have pastored off and on for years so public speaking became a weekly occurrence for me. Embracing your weakness and having the willingness to learn new skills will only make you a better leader, employer, spouse and friend. You will gain new wisdom from a new perspective.

Find a mentor

This sounds simple enough but you cannot just trust anyone to be a mentor in your life. You need someone who you can trust to speak truth into your life. Someone that you are willing to follow their leadership. Someone that makes you a better person. Someone that you can be vulnerable with. Entering into this relationship keeps you teachable and humble. You will find encouragement to do things you may not otherwise have even thought possible.

If any of this resonates with you then you probably have always been hesitant to book a photoshoot. It may be because you're afraid of trying something new. You're afraid you may look bad or be super awkward. Maybe you feel that your business is not at the level where you need a photoshoot.
